The Penn State Alumni Association

What’s been happening:

After receiving a BS in biology from Muhlenberg College, I came to Penn State under a fellowship from the Microbiology Department. In 1965 I completed my MS under Dr. Robert Stone (department chair at PSU), and with the help of John Forro, a senior graduate student (who later got his PhD there). I received my PhD in Pathobiology in 1971 at the University of Colorado Medical Center. I took a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Russell Barrnett in the Anatomy Department at Yale University, and spent 3 years there receiving further research training in cytochemistry, as well as gain useful exposure to some excellent teachers including Drs. Barrnett, Jim Jamieson, and George Palade. My first faculty position was in the Department of Anatomy at LSU in New Orleans, where I received tenure and an NIH grant. After 6 years there, I moved to ETSU College of Medicine, Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology in 1981, and have been here ever since (as a full professor since 1986). I have published over 70 full papers (the first one at PSU) and over 100 abstracts. I have received "Professor of The Year" award twelve times (most recently in 2009). In all these years I must admit that the institution with the best spirit and best education with which I was associated, was, and always will be Penn State. My wife Susan (Moyer) and I have three sons, Kurt (PA), Eric (MD), and Mark (MS).
